Saliva as a diagnostic tool for COVID-19: A comprehensive extraction-based workflow from collection to detection
To combat a fast-evolving global pandemic like COVID-19, it is essential to develop rapid and accurate diagnostic tests with a quick turnaround time. Recently, saliva has emerged as a viable alternate sample source to nasopharyngeal swabs and has shown to have greater detection sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2, as well as consistency throughout the course of infection. Saliva collection is non-invasive, can be self-administered in the convenience of one’s home eliminating the exposure risk to healthcare workers, and reduces the overall burden on swab and personal protective equipment supplies.

DNA Genotek’s OMNIgene®•ORAL (OM-505) and ORAcollect®•RNA (OR-100) collection and stabilization devices are two saliva-based solutions for molecular COVID testing applications, which have been proven to detect and inactivate the SARS-CoV2 virus.

To effectively slow the spread of disease, it is also imperative to have rapid extraction methodologies that can maximize the testing capacity without compromising sensitivity of detection. Omega Bio-tek’s Mag-Bind® Viral RNA Xpress Kit (M6219-2304) answers the speed, scale and high throughput need with its magnetic-bead based approach that can easily be automated on most open-ended liquid handling platforms as well as magnetic processors.

Join DNA Genotek’s Dr. Tara Crawford Parks and Omega Bio-tek's Dr. Kiranmai Durvasula as they present findings from their recent study verifying the use of saliva collected in OMNIgene®•ORAL (OM-505) and ORAcollect®•RNA (OR-100) in conjunction with viral RNA extraction using Omega Bio-tek’s Mag-Bind® Viral RNA Xpress Kit to enable viral detection via RT-PCR.

We will hold an open Q&A session to answer your questions. Bring them to the live event or submit them through the registration form below.

Speakers

Tara Crawford Parks, Ph.D
Scientist @DNA Genotek Inc.
Dr. Tara Crawford Parks joined the DNA Genotek R&D team as a Scientist working on the product development team at the start of 2019. She leads multiple projects to support the verification and validation efforts of our molecular products. Prior to joining our team, Tara received her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science with a minor in Chemistry and her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the University of Ottawa where she pursued her post-doctoral research and later worked as a Research Associate. She has expertise in cellular and molecular biology with a focus on translational medicine and human health specifically in the areas of neuromuscular disease and cancer biology.
Kiranmai Durvasula, Ph.D.
Product Manager @Omega Bio-tek, Inc
Kiranmai Durvasula (Ph.D) is a Product Manager at Omega Bio-tek, Inc, leading the efforts to develop and deliver novel nucleic acid extraction products supporting the fields of basic and translation research, diagnostics, pharmacogenomics, etc. Previously, she served as Biological Scientist at Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR/STTR) grants funded start-up (OpenCell Technologies Inc.) developing an innovative intracellular delivery and transfection device. Dr. Durvasula obtained her PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Florida, Gainesville. She received postdoctoral training in cell-based therapies for treatment of insulin-dependent diabetes in Dr. Athanassios Sambanis’s laboratory at Georgia Institute of Technology. She has authored several peer-reviewed journal papers and passionate about translating fundamental research platforms into practical technologies.
